Tips for Sedentary Workers
Research published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine concluded that office workers spent between 65% and 75% of their working hours sitting down, with half sedentary for long periods.
As a result, it states that:
1. For those occupations that are mainly desk based, workers should aim to accumulate two hours a day of standing and light activity (such as gentle walking) during work hours, eventually aiming for a total of 4 hrs each day
2. Seated work should be broken up with standing work, with people being encouraged to use sit/ stand desks or to take short, active "standing breaks"
3. Alongside health promotion goals such as improved nutrition and reducing alcohol, smoking and stress, companies should teach staff about the risks of prolonged sitting, both at work and at home, and the effect it can have on health and mortality.
